Storage for a growing family – room for a new baby without moving house

Updated June 20264 min readBy Selvbetjeningslageret

When your family grows, your home shrinks. Suddenly you need a nursery, somewhere to keep the pram and baby carrier, and room for all the lovely baby gear that is too good to throw away – but that you do not need right now. A small storage unit with Selvbetjeningslageret in Bergen or Haugesund lets you free up a whole room at home without getting rid of anything. Set furniture, seasonal items and gear safely aside, and bring it back when you need it – whether for the next baby or as the children grow.

When does a family need extra space?

  • A new baby on the way: The office or guest room is becoming a nursery, and the furniture that was there needs somewhere to go.
  • Baby gear between children: A pram, travel cot, bouncer and baby carrier are too expensive and lovely to sell when you are planning more children.
  • Hand-me-downs and clothes for the next sibling: Boxes of baby clothes sorted by size take up wardrobe space you would rather use for everyday things.
  • Large furniture you want to keep: A sofa, bookcase or dining table that does not fit right now, but that you will want back later.
  • Seasonal items all year round: Bikes, sledges, summer toys and garden furniture need not be in the way at home all year.

How long should you rent?

With us there is no binding period and no notice period – you rent month to month and cancel whenever it suits you. Many growing families rent during the intense period around the birth and the first years, while others keep the unit for several years to save baby gear for the next child. You only pay for the time you actually use, and you can switch to a larger or smaller unit at any time at no fee. Need more space when your second child arrives? Simply upgrade. Season over and you have had a clear-out? Scale back down.

What size do you need?

Our units range from roughly 2–50 m², but a growing family usually manages with a small to medium unit. Always measure in square metres of floor area:

  • Around 3 m²: Baby gear, a few boxes of clothes and a pram – perfect between two children.
  • Around 4–5 m²: The contents of one room: a bed, chest of drawers, some furniture and moving boxes.
  • Around 6–7 m²: A sofa, dining table and bookcases plus seasonal items and baby gear gathered in one place.

If in doubt, choose slightly too big – you can always switch down later at no cost.

How to make room at home as the family grows

The idea is simple: move what you do not use daily out of the house, so the room you need becomes free for the baby. An office becomes a nursery over a weekend once the furniture has somewhere to go. Baby gear to be passed on stays clean and safe in the unit instead of gathering dust in the loft. And because you have your own electronic access code and can come every day between 07:00 and 23:00, you quickly fetch the sledge, summer clothes or travel cot exactly when you need them – without arranging anything with anyone.

Tips: Borrow a closed Tysse box trailer and trolleys from us free of charge when moving furniture or baby gear. That saves you several trips in the rain, and bulky items reach the unit safely and dry in one go.

Practical tips for storing seasonal and baby items safely

  • Wash before storing: Clothes and textiles should be clean and completely dry before packing, to avoid odours and discolouration.
  • Use sealed boxes: Clear plastic boxes keep baby clothes dust-free and let you see the contents without opening everything.
  • Label by size and age: Write “0–6 months”, “winter” or “pram parts” on the boxes, so you find things in seconds.
  • Take large items apart: Dismantle the cot and pram to save space, and tape the screws in a bag to the part.
  • Put heavy things at the bottom: Stack securely, and leave an aisle clear so you can reach everything – even the boxes right at the back.

Frequently asked questions

How big a unit does a growing family need?

Most families manage with a small to medium unit of around 3 to 7 square metres of floor area. Around 3 square metres holds baby gear, a pram and a few boxes of clothes between two children. If you need to clear a whole room to create a nursery, 4 to 5 square metres often works, while 6 to 7 square metres also fits a sofa, dining table and seasonal items. If in doubt, choose slightly too big – you can switch down later at no fee.

Can I switch to a bigger unit when my second child arrives?

Yes. You can switch to a larger or smaller unit at any time with no fee at all. When your family grows and you need more space, you simply upgrade. When the season is over or you have had a clear-out, you scale back down. You only pay for the size you actually use.

Is there a binding period if I only need storage for a short time?

No. There is no binding period and no notice period. You rent month to month and cancel whenever it suits you. Many families rent only during the busy period around the birth and the first years, while others keep the unit longer to save baby gear for the next child. You pay only for the time you use.

When can I drop off and pick up items from the unit?

You have your own personal electronic access code and can come every day between 07:00 and 23:00. You do not need to book a time or meet anyone – you fetch the sledge, summer clothes or travel cot exactly when your family needs them.

Are baby gear and clothes stored safely with you?

Yes. The branches have video surveillance, an alarm and electronic access control, and the units are shielded from view. Only you as the tenant has access to your own unit. Pack clothes and textiles clean and dry in sealed plastic boxes, and the baby gear will stay in good condition between children.
