Storage during renovation — keep your furniture dust-free and safe

Updated June 20264 min readBy Selvbetjeningslageret

When the tradespeople move in, your home quickly turns into a building site of dust, paint splatter and tools. Whether you are renovating the kitchen, the bathroom or the whole living room, it is smarter to move your furniture, electronics and textiles out than to cover them up and hope for the best. A self-service storage unit gives you a clean, secure room to keep your belongings in while the work is under way — and the job gets done faster once the rooms are cleared. At Selvbetjeningslageret in Bergen and Haugesund you rent for exactly as long as the project lasts, with no fixed term, and you get your own electronic access code every day between 07:00 and 23:00.

When do you need storage during a renovation?

  • Kitchen or bathroom renovation: the room has to be cleared completely, and you need somewhere to put white goods, cabinets and fittings while the plumber and joiner work.
  • Flooring or painting: all furniture must come out so the floor can be sanded, filled and lacquered without damage.
  • Whole flats or houses: for bigger projects it is easiest to clear several rooms at once and give the tradespeople free run of the place.
  • Protecting delicate items: sofas, bookcases, electronics and textiles cope badly with building dust and damp — they belong safely out of the way.
  • Temporary move-out: if you are staying elsewhere during the work, your whole household can sit together in one unit.

How long should you rent for?

A renovation often takes anything from a few weeks to a few months, and things rarely go exactly to plan. That is why you rent month to month with us — no fixed term and no notice period. If the project slips, you simply keep the unit a little longer; if you finish early, you cancel whenever you like. Our advice is to budget a little extra time so you are not forced to move back before everything is dry and finished. Prices start from a few hundred kroner a month, and you can switch to a larger or smaller unit at any time at no fee if your needs change.

What size do you need?

  • 2–4 m²: the contents of one room — furniture from a bedroom or a small living room.
  • 5–10 m²: a couple of rooms' worth of furniture, typical for a kitchen or bathroom renovation.
  • 10–15 m²: a whole flat or several rooms with white goods and larger furniture.
  • 15–25 m²: the contents of an entire house during extensive renovation.
  • 25–50 m²: large projects with a lot of furniture, or if you also need to store building materials.

If you are in doubt, go slightly larger rather than too small — it is easier to pack and unload when you have room to move. You will find all sizes and live prices here.

What should be moved out — and what can be covered in place?

Anything sensitive to dust, damp and knocks should leave the room: sofas and chairs with fabric covers, electronics and white goods, books, clothes, rugs and paintings. Heavy items that you do not want in the tradespeople's way — tables, chests of drawers, shelving — are also easier to store than to shuffle from room to room. Anything too large or fixed in place to move can be covered well with plastic and building card where it stands. Our units are ventilated and secured with video surveillance, alarm and electronic access control, and they are shielded from view — only you have access.

How to protect your belongings during the renovation

  • Pack in sealed boxes: use sturdy plastic crates with lids rather than open boxes, so the dust stays out.
  • Cover the furniture: lay moving blankets or breathable covers over sofas and tables — avoid airtight plastic that can cause condensation.
  • Dismantle where you can: take beds and shelving apart to fit more in and avoid scratches.
  • Keep electronics dry: pack the TV, computer and sound system in their original boxes or well padded.
  • Label the boxes: write the room and contents on each box so both moving in and collecting are quick.
Tips: Borrow our closed Tysse box trailer and a sack truck free of charge — that way you move the furniture in one or two trips instead of many, and avoid carrying heavy items on your own.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to rent storage during the renovation?

You rent month to month with no fixed term and no notice period. That means you can rent for exactly as many weeks or months as the renovation takes and cancel when you are finished. If the project is delayed, you simply keep the unit a little longer.

Can I move in the same day I book?

Yes. You book the unit online in a few minutes and can move in the same day. You receive your own electronic access code and can come and go whenever it suits you, every day between 07:00 and 23:00.

What size suits the contents of a couple of rooms?

The furniture from a couple of rooms typically corresponds to around 5–10 m², which is often about right for a kitchen or bathroom renovation. If you are unsure, go slightly larger, and remember you can switch to a different size at any time at no fee.

How do I get the heavy furniture to the unit?

You can borrow a closed Tysse box trailer and trolleys or sack trucks completely free of charge. That way you move furniture and white goods in one or two trips and avoid carrying heavy items on your own over several rounds.

Are my belongings safe from dust and damp in the unit?

Yes. The units are ventilated and secured with video surveillance, alarm and electronic access control, and they are shielded from view so only you have access. Pack in sealed boxes and cover furniture with breathable covers, and your things will stay clean and dry.
