Storage for tradespeople — tools, materials and machines close to the job

Updated June 20264 min readBy Selvbetjeningslageret

As a tradesperson, you gain nothing from hauling the whole workshop around every day. A self-storage unit at Selvbetjeningslageret lets you keep tools, materials and machines stored safely close to the job — so you can head straight to site in the morning and drop the gear back in the evening. You get your own electronic access code and can come by every day 07:00–23:00, whether you want to grab something before work or unload after a long day. No binding period, no notice period, and you can switch unit size or rent an extra unit exactly when your workload changes.

What do tradespeople use storage for?

A unit works as a flexible extension of the van and the workshop. Typical contents:

  • Tools: hand tools, power tools, batteries and chargers you would rather not leave in the van overnight.
  • Materials: plasterboard, battens, pipes, tiles, paint and leftover stock between projects.
  • Machines: chop saws, compressors, floor sanders, scaffolding and other heavy kit that takes up space.
  • Seasonal equipment: snow blowers, lawnmowers, heat fans and gear you only use part of the year.
  • Project goods: purchases for a specific job, kept ready for fitting or collection.

Access close to the job, every day 07:00–23:00

You decide when you pop in. With a personal electronic access code you get in every day between 07:00 and 23:00 — no need to arrange it with anyone first. That means you can grab tools before your first client, top up on materials mid-day or drop off machines on the way home. With branches in Bergen and Haugesund, you will usually find a unit within easy driving distance of where the jobs are.

Tips: Keep the most-used tools nearest the door and the heavy machines at the back. That way loading the van takes seconds in the morning rather than minutes.

What size do you need?

Units range from roughly 2 to 50 m², so there is a size to match exactly what you need:

  • Around 2–4 m²: suits hand tools, power tools, batteries and a box or two of consumables.
  • Around 6–10 m²: room for tools plus materials and a few smaller machines between jobs.
  • Around 15 m² and up: roughly a full van's worth of gear — machines, scaffolding, materials and project goods gathered in one place.

Not sure what fits? See up-to-date sizes and prices and sizes so you pick the right one from the start. Need more room during a busy spell? Just rent another unit at no extra fee.

Secure for valuable equipment

Tools and machines represent serious value, and they need to be safe. The storage facilities are protected with alarm, video surveillance and electronic access control. Units are shielded from view, and only you have access to your own unit. You can stop worrying about gear left unattended in the van overnight — it sits locked away and monitored until you come back for it.

Practical tips for organising and loading

A little structure saves a lot of time in a hectic day:

  • Drive-in and lift-free loading: some branches have drive-in and lift-free (heisfri) access, so you wheel heavy kit straight in without stairs or lifting.
  • Loan trailer and trolleys: borrow a closed Tysse box trailer plus trolleys and sack trucks free of charge when you need to move a lot at once.
  • Shelving: put up racks along the walls to use the height and keep the floor clear for wheeling.
  • Labelling: label boxes and shelves clearly — then you find the right parts and materials in seconds.
  • Fixed spots: give each machine and tool box its fixed place, so you always know what is there and what is missing.

Frequently asked questions

When can I access the storage?

You have access every day between 07:00 and 23:00 with your own personal electronic access code. There is no need to arrange it with anyone in advance, so you can grab tools before work or drop off machines after a long day whenever it suits you.

Is there a binding period?

No. The rental runs month to month with no binding period and no notice period. That suits tradespeople with a fluctuating workload — you rent for as long as you need and end it when the project is finished.

How secure is my equipment?

The facilities are protected with alarm, video surveillance and electronic access control. Units are shielded from view, and only you have access to your own unit. Tools and machines stay locked away and monitored instead of sitting unattended in the van.

Can I rent an extra unit during a busy period?

Yes. You can rent extra units or switch to a larger size at no fee when your workload increases, and scale back again when things calm down. That way you only pay for the space you actually need.

Can I drive right in and load heavy equipment without lifting up stairs?

Some branches have drive-in and lift-free access, so you can wheel machines and heavy kit straight in without stairs or a lift. You can also borrow a closed Tysse box trailer plus trolleys and sack trucks free of charge when you need to move a lot at once.
